Thank you, Coach Driggs, for the coaching example you gave me! God knew what he was doing because I couldn’t have picked a better mentor. You showed me what it means to “out-work your players”; your efforts always extended beyond the court. Thank you for educating me on how to build a REAL team and on how contagious passion and enthusiasm really are….I am forever grateful and will always think of you when I pick up a whistle! You are dearly missed.

Cyndy Driggs will leave the sidelines as one of the most successful basketball coaches in SVC history.

The winningest coach in Unioto Basketball history has announced her retirement from coaching. Cyndy Driggs is hanging-up the coaching whistle after a total of 17 seasons at three different schools.

Driggs began her varsity basketball coaching career in 1983 at Paint Valley, then moved to Unioto in 1985- for the first of two separate coaching stints with the Lady Shermans. Her first stay at Unioto lasted 9 years, before she took a few years off, then returned to the sidelines in 1999 at Zane Trace for three years. After leaving the Lady Pioneers and being away from the game for five years, she returned to Unioto over the past 4 years.

Her most successful run was at Unioto, where she led the Lady Tanks to State Runner-Up finishes in the spring of 1987 and 1989 and was a State Semi–Finalist in 1995. Driggs also won 8 of her 9 SVC championships at Unioto, where her record was (250-54). Her overall career record was (306-86). Her other SVC title was with Zane Trace.

Cyndy Driggs was named SVC Coach of the Year- 6 times, was District Coach of the Year-3 times and Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association D-2 Coach of the Year in 2009. She was selected to coach the North/South All Star Game in 2010.

Driggs will continue to teach at Unioto, while she pursues her master’s degree.

In a prepared release for WKKJ Sports, Driggs said quote: “I have been blessed with tremendous talent and the support staff and administration at Unioto. The journey has been good, with great memories. Most of all, I am thankful to the Lord for His wisdom and guidance throughout the journey. I like the song You Raise Me Up, because I feel the words apply to my years of coaching. He certainly has raised our efforts up, so we can walk on mountains and I am strong when I am on His shoulders… He has raised me up to be more than I can be”.

Coming to a Close

This blog is now coming to a close as a great coach’s era wraps up. Congrats to the Lady Shermans on another successful season! Congrats on the double-duo COY & POY selections and those Lady Shermans moving on to a new chapter in collegiate athletics! Best wishes to ALL!

The tanks sank the Vikings’ ship on Saturday, Dec. 5th. It’s not the first time Vinton Co. has walked the plank because of the high-powered, heavy armored, TANKS; they suffered the same shipwreck in 2008 when the visiting Shermans plowed ahead in the 1st quarter and never looked back.

All-in-all, UHS appears to still be going strong this 2009 holiday season!—Go Tanks!

Lady Shermans beat 8th-Ranked Cincinnati Indian Hill in Season Opener

Wow, the Lady Shermans are back….focused….with sights set further down the road, they look ready to plow over their opponents one game at a time. If you’ve ever worked diligently to spin a ball on your fingertips, dreamt in purple and gold, or let your legs spring forth with arms flaring loose to cheer in the stands, you know what it feels like to be passionate about something; and the Lady Shermans are passionate about basketball.

With their first win over state-ranked Indian Hill, I bet it’s a safe to say that there are plenty more where that came from…

FOCUSED and TOGETHER, I bet they go the distance! Best of luck to Coach Driggs & the Lady Shermans:)

Geared specifically for young players

Age brackets broken down by age rather than lumped together
Separate boys and girls division broken down into ages:

5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14

Lower baskets for younger players
Reasonable entry fee of $55.00 per team
- 3 game guarantee
Awards for winners of each age group

Driggs Get 201st Win at Unioto

Driggs now sets her sights on the Ron Lovely’s Unioto school record of 205 wins.

Unioto’s Cyndy Driggs picked up career win number 200 at Unioto January 8th as her Lady Shermans pasted Piketon 65-32.

She now stands at 201 with a big win against Adena the following Saturday.

Ron Lovely holds the record for most boys basketball coaching wins at 205.

Driggs has 243 total wins, including stints also at Paint Valley and Zane Trace with 14 years as a head coach.

For Janae Driggs, Unioto coaches Cyndy and Jerry Driggs aren’t just Mom and Dad.

They’re coach and Jerry, the same as it is for the rest of the Shermans.

“I guess on my team I don’t really see my parents as my mom and dad. Well, I do, but they’ve got 10 daughters. That is how tight we are. We’re really close,” Janae said.

She isn’t alone.

At the SVC Preview Friday night, three coaches had daughters out on the court, and in Adena coach Lee Snyder’s case, two.

SVC Coach of the Year

Unioto coach Cyndy Driggs knows she couldn’t have done it alone. It took plenty of sacrifice and commitment to lead her young Shermans squad to a 13-1 SVC championship season.

“I just think it’s a reflection of your players and how they have bought into your program and have been willing to sacrifice for the good of the team,” said Driggs.

That, and of course, the help of two dedicated assistants.

“Jerry Driggs (husband) is a good motivator. He is in charge of motivation and gets the girls ready to go before games. He’s also in charge of our pressure defense and does a great job. Brooklyn Betts she is just a real asset to the whole program and is very upbeat and knowledgeable about the game. She really has a lot of fun with the kids,” said Driggs.

Driggs is pleased to have had the opportunity to take over the program she ran from 1986-95. Last season she served as Unioto’s eighth grade coach, moving up with a talented freshman class, including her own daughter, Janae.

“We have worked with them the last four years throughout the pewees,” said Driggs.

Her return to the program, up to now, has been successful for all those involved.

“It’s been very nice and a lot of fun. It’s a good program. I came into a good program that has a lot of basketball tradition since the last 20 years,” said Driggs.

As for the team that started their quest for a league title back in April, Driggs has a message for them.

“I want to thank them for all their hard work and dedication and belief in the system that we’ve brought,” she said.
